The tomahawk eye opening is a tapered teardrop shaped.
The handles load from the top by dropping a tapered teardrop shape handle bottom end first down throughthe top opening of the tomahawk eye. 
Because it is a tapered opening receiving a tapered handle .. as the same time the top of the eye opening and handle seats, so does the bottom opening and handle
The top eye opening of the head is apx 1-5/8" from the teardrop point to the back curve and axp 1" middle side to sideThe bottom eye opening of the head is apx 1-1/2" from the teardrop point to the back curve and axp 7/8" middle side to side.

This can vary slightly for head to head, but usually there is apx 1/8" difference between the top opening and the bottom opening.
