Polished Ammonite Fossil Assorted Sizes 1" to 1 1/2" Flat
The front side is polished , the back side is unpolished.
Ammonites are related to squid, octopus, and cuttlefish.
They grew to a length of few centimeters to 3 centimeters across and fed upon any thing from plankton to fish, though given the cumbersome nature of the shells of some species, they may have exclusively eaten plankton.
Ammonites become extinct at the end of the Cretaceous. Their reign spans 350 million years and so far 7,500 species have been identified
The assorted size of the Ammonoidea range from 1" D x 316" Thick to 1 1/2" D x 1/4" Thick.
The Ammonites all possessed an external Spiral shape shell, which somewhat resemble tightly coiled rams horns.
As they died their shells accumulated on the ocean floor and would become covered by sediments which transformed into stone over the ages.
Ammonoidea date back 500 to 190 million years ago.
Sold by the individual piece. The group picture is to show the variety of shapes and styles.
